Cam Scale Studio Visit

Leading up to Melbourne artist Cam Scale’s solo exhibition in 2016, we had the pleasure of visiting his workspace at the iconic Juddy Roller studio in Collingwood. Known for his large-scale murals and hyper-realistic portraiture, Cam has established himself as a standout figure in the Australian street art scene. His work balances fine art technique with contemporary urban influence, making his pieces instantly recognizable and emotionally compelling.
During our visit, we were given an exclusive sneak peek at several works in progress. Towering canvases leaned against the walls, each revealing intricate detail and stunning use of light and shadow. Cam walked us through his process, explaining how he builds each piece layer by layer, often starting with reference photography before moving into freehand refinement and final touches. His use of texture and subtle color gradients gives his portraits a haunting lifelike quality.
Beyond the art, the studio itself was a fascinating space — raw and industrial, filled with paint-stained tools, brushes, sketches, and bits of inspiration tacked up along the walls. The atmosphere was charged with creativity and a quiet intensity, reflecting Cam’s focused and meticulous approach.
We spoke with Cam about his influences, which range from classical painters to modern urban culture, as well as his thoughts on how public art can shape community identity. He shared insights into his journey as an artist, his transition from commercial work to full-time muralist, and what it means to create something permanent in a world that moves quickly.
Cam’s solo show brought together a powerful body of work that was both technically impressive and emotionally resonant. Our studio visit offered a rare look behind the scenes — a chance to see not just the finished pieces, but the passion, discipline, and process that fuels them.
